A rainbow is a symbol of promise and hope that appears after a storm. Shannon and Jason have endured their share of storms.
After 4 years of trying to conceive, and 2 years of fertility treatments, a blood test finally confirmed the news Shannon and Jason were longing to receive: Shannon was pregnant. The baby they’d waited and prayed for was finally becoming a reality and they were elated. Tragically, their joy was soon overshadowed by sorrow, when at 24 weeks’ gestation, the baby was diagnosed with Skeletal Dysplasia. Shannon and Jason were told that their daughters life would be measured in hours rather than years.
Teagan Joy was born on August 22, 2014, and passed away a few hours later. I was privileged to photograph her birth and be one of the few people to meet her on this side of heaven. I will never forget that day. It was so mixed with joy and pain. I remember fighting back tears as I listened to Jason read Teagan these lines from the book God Gave Us You, in which the Mama bear tells her baby,
“’When we found out you were growing inside me, we were so happy! Even the angles were celebrating for us!’
‘Because of me?’ asked Little Cub. ‘Yes, my darling child. Because God gave us you.’”
Shannon and Jason are amazing people ,and watching them love Teagan and cherish every second of her short life was beautiful and moving. But knowing that the baby they had waited so long to hold would not be going home with them was heartbreaking. Their storm was fierce. But hope came to Shannon and Jason. More than a year after Teagan’s arrival, they learned another baby would be joining their family. Last month, a sweet, healthy, baby boy was born to them, with all the hope and promise that a new life brings. It was such a joy for me to capture Seth’s new life story. I am so thankful that my camera has lead me to know such dear people like Shannon and Jason. I watched them walk an extremely difficult road while showing immense faith, grace, and strength, and it was thrilling to see their rainbow baby wrapped snuggly in their arms. For all the couples who are still in the midst of the storm of infertility and loss, I hope this story, this sweet rainbow baby, gives your heart hope. *If you’d like to read more about Shannon and Jason’s journey, check out Shannon’s blog here: http://thesecretplace13915.blogspot.com/?m=1
